Dancing Bear       Mike Jubb

I was caught

when I was only a few weeks old.

My mother tried to protect me,

so they shot her.

I've had many kinds of pain since but,

in some ways,

I think that was the worst.

Soon afterwards, my teeth and claws were

ripped out.

A red hot poker was forced through my muzzle.

A rough rope was pulled through the wound.

When they tug on the rope,

it looks like I'm dancing.

I'm not dancing.

I'm trying to escape from the pain.

So many pains.

And the people all… laugh.

A warm tale, beautifully illustrated, about a captive bear
who gets rescued.
